Tenebrae: Service of Shadows
(A worship service prepared for use by members of the United Church of Christ.)

A somber service moving from light to darkness as we hear the scriptural story of Jesus’ last week and his crucifixion. A series of readings, interspersed with a verse or two of some hymns, is marked by the extinguishing of candles; and if we were in a church sanctuary the cross might be draped in black or purple, and the service ends in darkness. Worshipers are thus invited into experiencing the events that led to Jesus’ death, before we realize the shift to Jesus’ resurrection on Easter.

Worshipers at home may wish to have a row of seven candles lit, which will be extinguished as the service progresses. Dim light is preferred, and as the service ends in darkness, you may wish to darken the room where you are taking part.
