Director of Young Adult & Family Ministry

Job Description


The Director will lead Pilgrim’s Young Adult and Family Ministry with a focus on recruiting and engaging with young adults, families, and high school age youth with a focus on bringing them into active fellowship, worship and mission in Pilgrim’s diverse, cross-generational community.  

Summary of Work

The Director will provide pastoral leadership, community outreach and development, and authentic and accessible Christ-centered mentorship for young adults, families, and high school age youth.  The Director will initiate and support programs that build community and help in faith formation. This position will interface with Pilgrim’s spiritual life and ministry and work to integrate young adults, families, and high school age youth into the Pilgrim community.  The Director will work in conjunction with staff, committees and the Senior Minister, and will work cooperatively with the Christian Education, Social Justice & Spiritual Life committees.

Terms of Work

  • Full-time salaried position

  • Develops/Manages the Young Adult & Family Ministry

  • Works with the Young Adult & Family Ministry Team to ensure programs fit within the vision and goals of the ministry and the overall Church vision

  • Establishes relationships with young adults, families, and high school age youth

  • Manages and maintains the Young Adult & Family Ministry Budget

  • Performs a variety of confidential pastoral duties related to the Young Adult & Family Ministry

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with the Montana State University community and additional locations where young people are active in and around Bozeman

  • Creates and manages quality programs tailored to young adults and families

  • Reports directly to the Young Adult Family Ministry Team


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Focus on creating and developing healthy and positive spiritual and supportive relationships with young adults (Age 14+) and families

    • Create, lead and participate in young adult programs

    • Aid young adults with transition from Christian Education programming to Young Adult programming, working in conjunction with Christian Education Director

    • Nurture relationship and spiritual support for college students, focused on UCC students from the local Conference

    • Use community-wide events as the initial and primary point of contact

  • Effectively advertise events on social media, paper and electronic platforms and grow a database of participants

  • Regularly inform and engage the congregation regarding programs and activities for young adult ministries

  • Create and lead mission opportunities involving young adults, families, and our cross-generational community

  • Recruit, orient, train and supervise volunteers to build and maintain programs

  • Be a champion of Pilgrim’s message of social justice in the Bozeman community

  • Liaise and coordinate with various Pilgrim committees as appropriate, including the Pastoral Relations and Christian Education Committees

  • Attend Sunday worship, Council meetings, and Young Adult & Family Ministry Team meetings

  • Serve as primary pastor to young adults, families, and high school age youth

  • Serve in pastoral care and worship in collaboration with Senior Minister

  • Participate, where appropriate, in Camp Mimanagish and other UCC Conference events

  • Participate in continuing education for professional development

  • Other duties as assigned


Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in community building and volunteer recruiting and management

  • Comfortable with the culture of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ

  • Four year college degree or seminary or multiple years experience in the field

  • Pass a background check

  • Team player with solid spiritual grounding and leadership/management skills

  • Passionate and educated in the development of youth and young adults

  • Positive personal experience with young adults and families

  • Desire and ability to motivate, encourage and mentor

  • Creative and self-motivated to act upon new ideas
